Amélia de Carvalho e Silva

Founder & Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Amélia is a graduate of human sciences with major languages and a Master in Psychology, and currently lives and works in Sao Paulo Brazil.  Her choice of dual qualification reflects her commitment to help others grow and become better at what they do through the transmittal of knowledge.  She is the Founder and CEO of Factor Humanus Scientia. Her chosen area of expert focus is the structure of the inner profile and how it can enable or restrict human potential, also known as human factors – the inspiration for the name of the company.

Dr Amelia describes human factors as the bridge between latent human capacities and their realization.

“In the early part of my career (1981-1983), during my Masters in Psychology, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work at the Fred Hutchson Cancer Research Center. There, I worked closely with patients who had been diagnosed with incurable terminal illnesses.  I worked with patients and their families to help them deal with the life-changing news they had received and to progress from a state of shock, panic, fear and rejection to one of acceptance and calm readiness.  In this emotionally intense environment, I witnessed the abilities of the human mind to engage with the gravest of external realities; life and death.  I appreciated that in order to connect authentically with the outer world, one must first increase awareness of the world.  I knew I could not do anything for these patients physically but I could at least help them acquire the ability to accept their fate by achieving a state of calm acceptance, utilizing means sourced from their own latent inner faculties.  I had to work in all possible ways to have an effective and  immediate impact on these lives.”

Dr. Amelia learned during this early experience, that it is not sufficient to deal solely with the inner profile of one individual.  This could only be effective if that individual lived in a social vacuum.  She realized, during this early work, that the inner profiles of those surrounding and interacting with the individual, and the energy produced by inter-personal interactions are incredibly impactful and determinative (for better or worse).  She decided that a more holistic and environmentally inclusive approach is needed if sustainable results are to be achieved.

“Put simply, while working with patients to awaken their consciousness to deal with their personal circumstances, it became obvious that their ability to reach goal was necessarily impacted by those closest to them – partners, children, parents, carers – even the treating healthcare professionals, in fact.  Although such stakeholders had good intentions, they too were limited by the conscious capacity of their own consciousness.  These people had good intentions of course, but good intentions don’t always lead to good outcomes, necessarily.  An isolationist approach wasn’t going to succeed because we, as humans, are inherently social creatures and interactions with other people (with different world views and different levels of consciousness of those profiles) put different demands and strains on the capacities and effective functioning of one’s own consciousness. This can lead to positive effects or may be the trigger for tensions and conflict…”

It occurred to Dr. Amelia that if science-based methods could unlock the potential to nobly face the greatest human challenge, namely mortality, it would be inspiring if a scientific method could be developed and applied to awaken inner potential and capacity to face – or embrace - other life challenges and opportunities.

Dr. Amelia first began to apply her skills to assist in the improvement of professional performance when invited to work with attorneys in Michigan to empower them to access their ability to gain conciousness and self-awareness to effectively and successfully communicate their legal argumentation to judges and juries.  “Professionals may approach problem-solving with a perspective that is received through the lens of their unawakened consciousness – a lens that is often biased and clouded.  This is something that needs to be worked on in order to achieve a greater clarity of approach.”

She spent years studying the theory and application of then-existing scientific methodologies towards this aim but, despite their strengths, she believed a new method was needed to address the nuanced and complex needs of people who sought her assistance.

“Many of the methodologies used to reveal and awaken self awareness/ consciousness and potential are linear in nature.  It can be quite obvious to the individual what the questions and exercises are designed to reveal and, therefore, are open to potential conscious manipulation or bias interference (neither of which are desirable, particularly in the field of human factors).

Also, the existing methodologies weren’t designed to generate a complete picture of the inner profile.  Ironically, it was almost as though the methods had exactly what they were designed to help eliminate in others, namely, a blind spot. More work needed to be done to develop a new methodology with greater scope of reach, which was less linear or obvious as to its pursuits.”

Indeed, the powerful impact of inter-professional interactions would prove itself through a fortuitous encounter with Dr. Luis Antonio Ervolino that would precipitate a breakthrough in her thinking and approach.  This encounter occurred in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil at the Tanology Congress in November in 1987.

“From the moment we met, we both knew we had a mission to work on together, I was clear on what I knew was effective and had been trying many different methodologies through the years and what Dr. Luis Ervolino had already  created was a scientific base for what I already experimented and applied. Dr. Luis Ervolino was struggling with the limitations of the methods used in his field of psychiatry at the same time that I was searching for answers to unanswered questions in my field of psychology.”

Dr. Amelia and Prof. exchanged perspectives and ideas over the course of time, advancing and challenging each other’s theories and thinking, thereby establishing the basis for what would eventually become ID One, the methodology developed and used at FHS, which through the years has now been adapted into different products to address a variety of typical professional needs.

Amelia and Dr. Luis worked together years desiccating the human consciousness, getting to the very core of the essence and its faculties.

“I believe the joining of our minds from different disciplines and perspectives to solve a shared problem created a creative intellectual turbulence, which unblocked the path to a breakthrough clarity of thinking. His theory applied through my method has become ID One – HUMAN FACTOR Sadly, Dr. Luis A Ervolino, passed away in 2011.  I am so pleased that his intellectual spirit lives on in the work that we do through the application of ID One to empower professional potential by increasing self-awareness of the inner profile.” This is a legacy he and I were determined to leave.

Dr. Amelia experienced the potential for wide social impact of the application of scientific methods first hand, during her work with the Brazilian Ministry of Health preparing health care professionals to deal with AIDS in its inception in Brazil. The work was so successful that Dr. Amelia and Dr. Luis were invited to  present to the World Health Organization in Geneva in 1989, which resulted in  the implementation of the methodology  with health care assistants in all Portuguese speaking countries in Africa.  This experience would many years later be the seed for the so-called Notre Dame Project.

Following this experience, Dr. Amelia decided to focus her efforts on the application of her methodology to the inner professional profile of individuals, leading to the establishment of FHS and the introduction of ID One for the professional community.

“I chose the egg as the symbol for ID One because of its simplicity and symbolic meaningfulness.  The egg…… QUOTE FROM AMELIA EXPLAINING THE CHOICE OF EGG AS SYMBOL

“Enlightened companies with important missions are exciting magnets for ambitious and focused people to gather and work together towards a common goal. If each individuals’  is highly functioning through increased self-awareness, and if a professional community can connect authentically and meaningfully, the path to success is widened and great things can happen quicker: innovation, inventiveness, creativity, even life-changing and life-saving achievements.  I learned the power of inter-professional connections through my work with Dr. Luis Ervolino.

The fact that our professional contributions can outlive our mortal selves is humbling and inspiring ”

“Through the rational application of our human factor methodology – ID One - within the international professional community, a wider impact on humanity can be achieved through the goods and services that these companies can contribute to society, fueling the wider economy, positively impacting consumers’ quality of life and generating platforms for further important derivative innovation and social change.  It is this belief that energizes me and those I work with and makes me believe in the mission of FHS – to empower professional potential through the capacities of the inner professional profile.”

“International business leaders often ask me: ‘Amelia, what is the most important key to professional success?’

I’ve thought about this a lot during my 30+ years of working with individual professionals and teams from companies across many countries, industries and cultures.

The answer is simple but true.  You must get to know yourself, your strengths and your weaknesses and especially your blind spots, understand how it may empower or inhibit you, appreciate which type of people or circumstances can trigger conflict, and continuously practice to make your inner profile a source of empowerment and confidence.

This is not a simple task and with the aim to help people get to know themselves better, we have established FHS and developed ID One.”
